Franklin High School Students Support Yolanda House
Students from Franklin High School participated in the 2010 CommuniCare program, started in Oregon 13 years ago by the Harold and Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation. The program is designed to show young people the importance of community service and the role of nonprofit organizations in making a community stronger.
Franklin, students participated with enthusiasm, raising $1,000 by selling handmade chocolate roses for $1 each to achieve the maximum award of $10,000 from the Foundation. They then solicited grant proposals, visited each site, and conducted thorough evaluations to determine how to apply their funds.
At a public ceremony held at the Portland Art Museum, a total of $50,000 was presented to local nonprofits from five CommuniCare programs. The YWCA of Greater Portland proudly received $3,000 to support the Yolanda House Domestic Violence Shelter from Franklin High School students.
Perkins Coie Women's Event
On February 25, 2010, the Women Attorneys of Perkins Coie sponsored a fundraising event for the YWCA's domestic violence shelter, Yolanda House. We would like to thank them for choosing us as their recipient this year! Thanks to their generosity, over $4,000 was raised to assist women and children escaping domestic violence.

YWCA Chosen for Oregon HEAT Pilot Program
The YWCA was one of two agencies in Multnomah County to receive grant funding to participate in the Oregon HEAT Pilot. This pilot program, in collaboration with PGE, is specifically targeted for people who are having short-term cash flow problems and need some assistance paying their PGE bills. To qualify, a household needs to be $200 past due on their PGE bill. The YWCA will work with them to determine a six-month payment plan, and PGE will contribute $100 in the first month, and $75 for the following five months. To remain in the program and also continue to receive PGE’s co-payments, the participant must continue to pay their negotiated monthly obligation. Yolanda House Kitchen Remodel
After two years of searching for the funding to address the urgent repair needs of the Yolanda House kitchen, we were successful! At our recent open house, Yolanda House staff - along with long-time Domestic Violence advocates (from l-r) Mult. County District Attorney Mike Schrunk, Commissioner Dan Saltzman, YWCA Board President Anne Denecke and Executive Director Eric Brown - showed off the new, state-of-the-art kitchen. Now, in the vibrant physical and social hub of this safe home environment, we are sure to see many healthy, healing meals.
Portland Business Journal Corporate Philanthropy Awards
The YWCA of Greater Portland was proud to be one of six Community Partners for the recent Portland Business Journal’s Corporate Philanthropy Awards. The event, held on October 1st, was a wonderful opportunity to recognize those businesses who have made a commitment to supporting our community and all of the wonderful work done by so many not-for-profit organizations in the Portl and area. YWCA Executive Director Eric Brown had this to say:
“The YWCA of Greater Portland, on behalf of its over 30,000 service-recipients, would like to thank the Portland Business Journal for taking the initiative to acknowledge the many great corporate organizations, without whose immeasurable contributions, the non-profits of Oregon could not sustain their important work. In celebrating 108 years of providing safety, opportunity and independence for Portland’s women, children and families, the YWCA of Greater Portland is privileged to partner with outstanding corporations as we work together to eliminate racism and empower women. Through innovative idea-sharing, funding, in-kind participation and volunteerism, these organizations allow us to leverage the efforts of our dedicated board and staff in seizing opportunities to serve those in need. We congratulate the recipients of these prestigious awards and look forward to ever greater partnerships in our mutual quests to build stronger, more sustainable communities for the benefit of everyone.”
Camp Westwind in the City
"It was the best camp they had all summer. I love that they went all over downtown, used public transit and were exposed to so many cool things." (Westwind in the City parent)

Camp Westwind in the City, a day camp headquartered at the main YWCA facility, was inaugurated in June. More than 300 children experienced Portland through the lens of environmental stewardship as they learned about the place in which they live and its hidden treasures. Kids who've been unable to experience camp now have a place to call their own. We'll be expanding to add school holiday opportunities this year.
